Dr.Stefane Kabene:

What is OCD?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or rituals (compulsions) aimed at alleviating anxiety or preventing perceived harm. Individuals with OCD often feel compelled to engage in rituals like excessive hand washing, checking, or arranging items in a particular way, despite recognizing these actions as irrational. OCD can significantly disrupt daily life, causing distress and impairing functioning. While the exact causes are unknown, a combination of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors likely contribute to its development. Treatment typically involves therapy, medication, or a combination of both to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

What is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts related to the traumatic experience. Individuals with PTSD often avoid situations or stimuli that remind them of the event, experience heightened arousal or hypervigilance, and may have mood disturbances. PTSD can significantly impact daily functioning and relationships. While commonly associated with combat veterans, PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced trauma, such as survivors of natural disasters, accidents, or abuse. Treatment typically involves therapy, medication, or a combination of both to address symptoms and promote healing.
